2012 year in review

Happy 2013! Here is a brief roundup of how 2012 went for Vijana FM.

Goodbye 2012, hello 2013!
Goodbye 2012, hello 2013!

In terms of visitation, we had over 36,000 unique visits to our website this year. Most visitors came in from Dar-es-Salaam, London, Geneva, Nairobi and Arusha (in order of frequency) and they visited about 2 pages on average.

Of those visits, we received about 400 comments on our blog posts. Most of these comments were attached to posts tagged with Politics, Economy, Education and Entrepreneurship. All top-commented on posts were tagged with either Tanzania or Africa, or both.

Approximately 8% of our visitation came from mobile devices (and most of these mobile users were running Android).

In terms of content, here are some of our popular posts from 2012 based on depth of comments:

Thank you, our readers and contributors, for engaging with the blog and other media products we are producing! We would also like to thank our partners –  CheusiDawa TVatKariakooMLab RecordsKina KlothingGongaMXVoice of the UndergroundCrowdmap (by Ushahidi),UserechoNdogoworksWeWriteBongolineSribuo MediaWavuti and most recently Sembramos Luz – for helping us organize and execute projects.

Of course, 2012 was not just about what happened, but also about what could happen. The questions we are asking ourselves moving forward are: How do we organize ourselves such that we can produce offline content as well? With what means can we support content collection and creation for the longer term? And, most importantly, what kind of discussion do young people want to get involved with in Tanzania and greater East Africa?

From all of us here at Vijana FM, happy 2013 once again! We look forward to continuing our work as a media platform that young East Africans can use to share, exchange, and develop ideas for sustainable development.

As always, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us if you have any questions about our work or suggestions on how we can improve!
