On Friday 10th September 2011, the ferry M.V. Spice Islander, travelling between Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Pemba and Tanga, capsized in deep waters in the Pemba Channel, north of Zanzibar island.

The true numbers of those injured or dead in the tragedy has yet to be established, but it is now acknowledged that there were many more passengers than the 610 listed on the ship manifest. As of Saturday night, 200 are dead, 500 have been rescued and many are still missing. The full extent of the tragedy will not be known for several more days.

Saidia Zanzibar (www.saidiazanzibar.org) is an emergency fundraising website, to provide caring members of the public, in Zanzibar and the world at large, with a framework to commit some of their time and money for the assistance of those tragically affected by the disaster.

We will be posting updates in the coming days, including a Zanzibar bank account to which money can be sent, and details of those organizations to whom the money will be subsequently disbursed on your behalf.

The fundraising effort will be overseen by the Zanzibar Association of Tourism Investors (www.zati.org), a registered NGO, who will co-ordinate donations and offers of assistance from their office located in the Cine Afrique in Malindi, Stone Town, Zanzibar.

Further updates will be posted throughout the period starting 12th September 2011. Email enquiries can be sent to: saidia@saidiazanzibar.org.

Kabwe eti alisitisha kutumia huduma yake ya Voda kwa siku moja, okay we’ll give you a Rosa Parks medal. I nearly jumped off the window when I heard of such nonsense. But seriously, that’s what I call a small insignificant victory, and narrow thinking to say the least. If you’re so pissed, you should lose your Voda line all together. As a Tanzanian, its such shallow thinking that gets us nowhere.

We should talk about the real issues, the real problems about the ferries and not boycotting, hows that going to change anything. Hasira hasara ndugu yangu, leta mada sio kuchochea uhasama.

Eti mna-boycott, basi boycott na kodi wanazolipa nchi, acha kutafuta cheap popularity by playing with peoples emotions, this is a new generation, we see through BSness. But mwisho wa siku, kila mtu na mawazo yake, its a free country after all.

  2. Would have been nice if Tanzanians abroad could contribute as well. I’m sure a lot of people would like to help.

  3. @ Bahati

Shindano linaitwa Vodacom Miss Tanzania so the buck stops with them.

Mimi I hope I will be proven wrong on this, kuwa vodacom as a company wont suffer, na watu wataendelea kulonga nao kama kawaida, manake ndivyo tulivyo.

Kama nilivyosema awali, boycott wont change anything, na msamaha wa vodacom hautanunua meli mpya, haya yote tunayopigia kelele ni symbolic stuff tu, huku tukifumbia macho real issues. Ndio maana jana nikasema hivi, wengi wetu tumekubali emotions zetu zi-lead the way.

All am asking is this, lets deal with the real issues, and the real culprits, vodacom sio sumatra, vodacom hawauzi ticket feki za meli, vodacom hawajazilii watu kwenye hizo meli, na sio kosa la vodacom kuwa mmeshindwa kununua meli mpya na zilizo salama kwa kusafiria.

Mwisho, kama ni kweli walichosema Sumatra juu ya meli ile kusimama baharini kwa saa nzima huku injini ikiwa imezima, kabla ya kuanza kuzama, then Sumatra ya ZNZ wasitake kutufanyia mazingaombwe hapa, they have some serious answering to do, ilikuaje Meli itoke Dar na weight sawa, ika overload kwao, sasa hapo mzembe ni nani. Mchawi yupo huko huko znz lakini anatafutwa bara..

Its high time we call a duck a duck, people have dropped the ball and its not helping that we’re looking for answer from all the wrong places. Viongozi wasijitie wako so emtional, its their fault na mipango yao mibovu ndio ilifanya MV Bukoba izame, na hii izame, na kama hatutataka kubadilika, subirini tu, this wont be the last time.

Zanzibar SUMATRA ndio nani? Let’s give them a name and mobilize ppl to act.

  6. @Neema: The Saidia Zanzibar Initiative has some information on their “How to help” page about how people who are not currently in Tanzania can send funds as well via wire transfer.

  7. @Sakura, kuudhabiwa kwa Voda kwa kukosa utu, kuzae matunda ya maana, thats all am saying, kwani tukiishia kususia tu huduma yao, then maana yake inakuwa haina uzito.

Mimi nasubiri kuona Tanzania ikianza mjadala kuhusu usafiri wa majini. Ndio maana nikasema, Voda ni mpangaji, nyumba ambayo in this case ndio Tanzania ndio yenye ufa.

Sasa nadhani MLK kama sikosei, akasema thats well and good, lakini then what? Why go through all that trouble to want to be served at the counter, when you dont have the money to buy the burger. His point being, the real issue kwanza ni kugombania kupata ajira kwa weusi then hayo mambo ya sit-ins can follow, after you have that money to spend. Huu ndio msimamo wangu kwenye hili.

Nasikia kuna basi limeanguka na kuuwa 10, I guess thats exactly my point AGAIN. Si Dar Express ilipoanguka watu walisusia kulipanda. Dar Express inawezekana walikula hasara, lakini that never stopped road accidents. Mimi msimamo wangu ni pale pale, lazima tufanye kitu tukiwa na malengo ya leo na kesho, kama tunafanya kitu bila kuwa na malengo, we’re just doing so we can have a good sleep at night, then we’re wasting our time.

I went even further kusema, sioni umuhimu wa kumfunga nahodha, kwani hata yeye akifungwa, bado tatizo wa usafiri umekuwa sugu sasa, na kila siku watu wanaotumia vyombo hivyo roho juu juu. Watanzania ni mengi hatufahamu, kwani hatujiulizi, mbona tatizo hili lipo kwenye Meli tu, mbona tuna boti za kwenda kazi mia kidogo. Why?

Boti za kasi zinawawekezaji kibao akina Bakhressa and friends, mbona hatuna mtu wa kuwekeza kwenye Meli, coz obviously there is a demand so there is money to be made, lakini mbona hatujaona uwekezaji huo, kuna siri gani hapo.

Hakuna mtu ameshangaa ajali imetokea basi likimpita lori, hata kama alikuwa sio kasi, what could be one of the causes, barabara hazina upana wa kuweza kuhimili vyombo hivyo. TUna issues which need to be dealt with.

All I can say ni, I hope ku-boycott Voda will lead to big, something that will actually bring attention to the real problems, otherwise, I will have to wish everyone GOOD LUCK, na mimi nitafungua ka-akaunti kadogo niwe nina save shilingi kadhaa za kuchangia rambirambi za majanga, kwani kwa mwendo huu, hayataisha leo…
