Dar-es-Salaam – “From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Let’s Challenge Militarism and End Violence Against Women!” was this year’s theme. The 16 day campaign this year is expected to focus on several priority areas.

The areas include economic and social rights, domestic violence, human rights violations, including sexual abuse of children, rape, domestic violence, sexual assault and harassment, trafficking of women and girls and several harmful traditional practices.

Women in Law and Development in Africa, Wildaf, who enhance a viable network for the promotion of respect for Women’s human rights through advocacy, organised a march against GBV with the slogan: OPEN UP! USE YOUR POWER PREVENT GENDER BASED VIOLENCE TO IMPROVE COMMUNITY HEALTH!

During the launch, Wildaf pointed out some of the issues surrounding GBV in the country and invited the Inspector General of Police Said Mwema to witness the launch of what they called the ” One Step Centres” which will incorporate all comprehensive services required for people suffering from abuse. This will be more in line with the Gender Desks but will include Health services, Police Services, Social Welfare work and Legal Aid all wrapped into one.

The launch was preceded by a public rally from Mnazi Mmoja Grounds via Morogoro Road, United Nations Road (Muhimbili) to Diamond Jubilee. The Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Angellah Kairuki, was the guest of honor.
